Chollet SquareAblon-sur-Seine (94)

Project Description
Located in the floodplain of the Seine, Chollet Square is one of the city's historic and foundational sites, marked by the church, Castel d'Ablon, and Rue du Bac.
This public space project provides an opportunity to explore water in its many facets: the ecosystems of wetlands, riparian forests along a river, water management... and the risks water poses. The redesign of this square aims to raise awareness of flood risks, making them visible through markers that indicate the centennial flood level.
The square has been reimagined to remain safe from flooding. New stairways descend toward the river, evoking the floodplain while also highlighting the site's flood-prone nature.
Each element of the project is designed to withstand the power of water, featuring large stone blocks that recall water even during dry periods. Drainage is managed through open channels, allowing water to naturally infiltrate the ground.
Reuse is another central theme of the project. Cobblestones uncovered from beneath asphalt, stones from an old wall, and abandoned rubble have all been repurposed.
The square, generously planted and shaded, becomes a comfortable meeting and relaxation space for residents. It also serves as a model for how urban design can support natural ecosystems.
