City CenterGamaches (80)

Project Description
Situated at the confluence of the Vimeuse and Bresle rivers, Gamaches has developed throughout its history thanks to water-related activities, such as the Courval glassworks. Once traversed by the Vimeuse and its tributaries, the town lost its connection to the water with the canalization and burial of the river. Today, the town center, dominated by cars and lacking vegetation, is disconnected from its geography.
The redevelopment of Gamaches addresses two major challenges: reconnecting with the presence of water and creating inviting public spaces suited for daily life and events.
The project aims to reveal the Vimeuse and restore its natural flow. By reintroducing the river to the open air, the town reconnects with its history and geography, offering a better understanding of the shape and public spaces. The watercourse regains its natural function through the regeneration of its floodplain, ecosystems, and biodiversity. This creates a new area within the town, blending nature with urban life.
Beyond the banks of the Vimeuse, the project strengthens the connection between the town center and surrounding natural spaces, such as the ponds of L'Epinoy, enhancing Gamaches' appeal as a tourist destination.
The Maréchal Leclercq Square, the central public square where the town hall is located, has a good commercial attractiveness but is currently used as a large parking lot. The aim is to humanize this space, making it a more inviting place for daily encounters and integrating nature more strongly.
These public spaces are designed to be flexible, accommodating daily activities (play areas, relaxation spaces, educational activities) while also being adaptable for occasional events. The project aims to transform Gamaches into a peaceful, ecological, and attractive town where residents and visitors can reconnect with the heart of the city amidst nature.
