Tuchkov ParkSaint Petersburg

Project Description

“Sense of a River” is a park located on a former island of the Neva River, which flows through Saint Petersburg, just a short distance from the Peter and Paul Fortress.
This park pays homage to Saint Petersburg and its culture. It is also an ode to the Neva, the "silent monument" that inspired Pushkin.

The park belongs to a vast archipelago that interacts with the river and its ecosystems, showcasing various expressions of nature all the way to the Gulf of Finland.
The site is part of a constellation of public spaces—plazas, gardens, and squares—that may one day come to life.

The project is organized around four main areas:

- The alluvial forest, which recreates the feeling of an island, provides a buffer from the city, and facilitates the management of rainwater and snowmelt.
- The large plain at the heart of the park, offering a wind-sheltered, comfortable space akin to a grand clearing.
- The network of islands, hosting diverse gardens and more intimate spaces, such as children's play areas or botanical experimentation gardens.
- The grand riverside promenade, which highlights the river and its built frontage envisioned by Peter the Great.

The climatic conditions and unique winds of Saint Petersburg influence the design of the tree network, ensuring the park's comfort across all seasons.
