Campagne LévêqueMarseille (13)
Project Description
On the hill of Saint-Louis, the Campagne Lévêque estate looks out over Marseille, its port and the mountains that frame the horizon. The long C building, with its 275-metre façade, forms with its neighbours a silhouette that belongs to the city's great landscape. Our proposal starts from this privilege: to turn the estate into a lived-in park, where every step uphill opens a new view of the sea.
The main street becomes a corniche road. It follows the slope in a long, gentle bend, passes beneath a pine grove, from shade to light, and strings together places to live in: a belvedere with its viewpoint table, open play clearings for everyone to make their own, a pétanque ground, a sports terrace. At the centre, the porches of the C building open onto a large gathering forecourt, ready for neighbours' parties, markets and community events. New paths and a stairway link the hill to the Chemin des Écoliers, the schools, the boulevards and the future tram stop.
The landscape is woven between two Mediterranean worlds. On one side, the pine grove: pines whose light canopy gives shade without closing the views. On the other, the memory of a vanished stream, traced by a water line and misters across the forecourt, then by swales and a rain garden that collect and soak up runoff. Permeable ground, low planting layers and fine-leaved trees all come together as a cool island for Marseille's summers.
At the foot of the buildings, front gardens, courtyard gardens and shared, educational gardens, designed with the neighbouring secondary and nursery schools, give everyone a patch of soil to grow and to share. Shaped with the residents, this landscape aims to give the neighbourhood a new postcard: an open, shaded and lively hill to be proud of.
