Pont-de-Clichy / Beaujon DistrictClichy-la-Garenne (92)

Project Description

At the northern gateway to Clichy-la-Garenne, where the bridge crosses the Seine, the Pont-de-Clichy / Beaujon district brings together older buildings, post-war housing estates and a mall lined with plane trees. Between 2015 and 2017, working with the City and a multidisciplinary team, we explored how this district could turn further towards the river and be enjoyed at a walking pace.

The project centres on the Léon Blum mall, which becomes the district's main shared space. Extended to the bridgehead and the riverbanks, it links the town centre, the hospital district, Beaujon and the Seine. Half paved, half planted and shaded by trees along its whole length, it unfolds in three sequences. First comes a central square opening onto the future media library, ready to host a market. Next is a green carpet of lawn and groves that residents cross and make their own. Last is the boules players' square, a stage for gatherings and celebrations.

A new row of plane trees deepens the shade along the mall. A planted cycle path runs alongside it from east to west. Swales collect rainwater and create settings that echo the nearby Seine. Visual openings frame views of the river, and extended streets offer quiet routes for people on foot.

Along the water, the Quai de Clichy gradually becomes a tree-lined metropolitan avenue that is easy to cross. An upper promenade welcomes cyclists, a lower promenade follows the Seine, and a planted central reservation links the two sides of the road. The district regains its frontage onto the river.
