Odysseum & Hippocrate DistrictMontpellier (34)

Project Description

Odysseum has long been perceived as a peripheral area. However, the neighborhood is now being incorporated into the urban growth of Montpellier, extending eastward toward the sea with the surrounding districts of Lironde, République, and Mogère. Previously characterized by vast road spaces and peripheral uses, it must now reintegrate into the city fabric. The challenge is to transform Odysseum into a more urban, fluid, and comfortable space, open to neighboring districts.

The neighborhood is marked by the introversion of its buildings, which do not engage with the public space. It is enclosed by large road infrastructures such as Boulevard Pénélope, Avenue Pierre Mendès France, and A709.

The project aims to enhance the structuring role of these roads by giving them a clear identity. Public spaces will evolve into tree-lined boulevards that are shaded and refreshing. A place is also made for the main beds of each of the three streams. The ambition is to turn the neighborhood toward the city, with buildings engaging with these redesigned public spaces to create a lively urban space for interaction and community.
